Hidrasec 100 mg, 10 Hard Capsules

It is a medicine in capsule form formulated with racecadotril as the active substance, which is used to treat the symptoms of acute non-specific diarrhoea in adults.

It comes in a convenient pack of 10 capsules.

Suitable for use in adults seeking treatment for the symptoms of diarrhoea.

The recommended dose is as follows: take one capsule 3 times a day, preferably before each main meal, with the aid of a little water to make it easier to swallow.

The treatment should be continued until 2 normal bowel movements have occurred. The maximum duration of treatment is 2 days. If symptoms do not improve or worsen after this time, a doctor should be consulted.

Do not use Hidrasec:

- In children under 18 years of age.

- If you are allergic to racecadotril or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.

- If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, or if you are breast-feeding.

Consult your doctor or pharmacist before you start taking Hidrasec if:

- there is blood or pus in your stools or if you have a fever. The cause of your diarrhoea may be a bacterial infection which should be treated by your doctor,

- you have chronic diarrhoea or diarrhoea caused by antibiotics,

- you have kidney or liver disease,

- you have prolonged or uncontrolled vomiting,

Like all medicines, Hidrasec can cause side effects, although not everybody will experience them. Specifically, the following effects have been reported:

• Frequent: headache
• Uncommon: rash and erythema (reddening of the skin).
• Frequency not known: erythema multiforme (reddish lesions on the extremities and inside the mouth), swelling of the tongue, swelling of the face, swelling of the lips, swelling of the eyelids, urticaria, erythema nodosum (swelling in the form of bumps under the skin).(swelling in the form of bumps under the skin), papular rash (skin rash with small, hard, lumpy lesions), prurigo (itchy skin lesions), pruritus (generalised itching) and toxic skin rash.

Stop taking Hidrasec and contact a doctor immediately if you experience symptoms of angioedema, such as:

• swelling of the face, tongue or pharynx
• difficulty swallowing
• hives and difficulty breathing

Each Hidrasec capsule contains 100 mg racecadotril as the active substance. The other excipients are lactose, pregelatinised maize starch, magnesium stearate and anhydrous colloidal silica. The capsule contains gelatin, iron oxide yellow (E 172) and titanium dioxide (E171).

Patients with diarrhoea should drink plenty of fluids, to avoid dehydration manifested by dry mouth, excessive thirst, decreased urination, wrinkled skin, dizziness, lightheadedness. This is especially important in the elderly.
