The morning-after pill, also known as the emergency contraceptive pill, is an emergency contraceptive method used after unprotected sex or when protection has failed.
It is important to know that this method should not be used as a regular contraceptive, as its high hormone content can cause menstrual imbalances, as well as various side effects.
Although the morning-after pill is highly effective if taken within hours of intercourse, it is not 100% reliable and unplanned pregnancies can occur.
To be as effective as possible, the emergency pill should be taken within 12 hours of intercourse. After that, the success rate decreases and after 72 hours it is not recommended as it would not be effective.
As an emergency contraceptive method, it should only be taken in exceptional cases, as its use could disrupt the menstrual cycle. After taking it, it is effective for 12 to 15 hours, so do not be overconfident and use alternative methods whenever you are going to have sex.
In principle, drinking alcohol would not alter the effect of the pill, although you should be careful not to drink too much, as if you vomit you could expel part of the contents of the pill, reducing or cancelling its effectiveness.
Short-term side effects of the morning-after pill include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, tiredness and breast tenderness.
These symptoms are usually mild and disappear within a day or two of taking the pill.
On the other hand, menstrual cycle disturbances are common and will only affect the cycle you are in:
- Before ovulation: will induce withdrawal bleeding, usually within a few days of taking the pill.
- After ovulation: menstruation may be delayed.
The price of the morning-after pill depends on two factors: the brand and the active ingredient.
In Spain, levonorgestrel pills cost around 20 euros (brands such as Norlevo and Postinor).
However, those formulated with ulipristal acetate have a higher cost, as it is an active ingredient of non-hormonal origin and is more effective. The price is approximately 30 euros, with ellaOne being the most famous brand.
