Cumbran is an emergency oral contraceptive used as a last resort after unprotected sex or when protection has failed.
It comes in a blister pack containing 1 tablet.
Formulated for adult women of childbearing age.
The tablet should be taken as soon as possible, preferably within 12-72 hours after unprotected sex or when contraception has failed.
The tablet can be taken at any time during the menstrual cycle.
Do not use Cumbran:
If you have had a previous ectopic (outside the uterus) pregnancy.
If you have had pelvic inflammatory disease (salpingitis).
If you have a high risk factor for thrombosis.
If you have a disease that interferes with the absorption of food and drugs.
If you have liver or bowel disease (such as Crohn's disease).
Pregnancy: this medicine does not interrupt an ongoing pregnancy, so do not take this medicine when you are pregnant.
Breast-feeding: It is possible to take this medicine while breast-feeding, but because levonorgestrel is excreted in breast milk, you should breast-feed immediately before taking the tablet and wait at least 8 hours before breast-feeding your baby again.
Like all medicines, Cumbran may cause side effects, but this does not mean that all women will experience side effects. In this case, the following common side effects have been observed: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, delayed menstrual period, bleeding, tiredness.
The active substance in Cumbran is levonorgestrel. Each tablet contains 1.5 mg levonorgestrel. The other ingredients are: lactose monohydrate, povidone (E-1201), maize starch, colloidal anhydrous silica (E-551) and magnesium stearate (E-572).
This medicine comes in a white tablet. As it is an emergency contraceptive, it should not be used as a regular method of contraception. It should be taken as soon as possible after sexual intercourse.
If you vomit within 3 hours after administration, you should take another tablet as soon as possible.
