Vaginal dryness

What is vaginal dryness?

Vaginal dryness is a problem that affects many women. Although it is usually associated with the menopause, it is not a problem exclusive to that stage and can appear at any stage of life and is often very uncomfortable.

Flora and mucus contribute to good vaginal hydration. When the balance between the two breaks down, vaginal dryness occurs.

Causes

Vaginal dryness can be due to different causes that alter the vaginal flora and mucosa:

Decrease in oestrogen in menopause (affects 40% of women).

Use of hormonal contraceptives.

Hormonal medication to treat breast cancer, endometriosis, myomas or infertility.

Persistent stress.

Vaginal infections.

Smoking.

Poor hygiene habits: harsh soaps, non-breathable clothing, scented pads and tampons.

Symptoms

Symptoms of vaginal dryness may include:

Burning sensation in the genital area

Pain during intercourse

Burning during urination

Little or no discharge.

Such symptoms can affect a woman's quality of life.

Treatment for vaginal dryness

Intimate dryness is often treated with a vaginal moisturiser. This is a gel that is introduced into the vaginal cavity to moisten the area and help the discomfort to disappear. It is recommended to use a product that does not contain colourants or perfumes, so that it is more respectful of the intimate area.

To improve sensations during sexual intercourse, a lubricant is often used. It is preferable for it to be water-based to help hydration and to be compatible with the use of condoms.

If the vaginal dryness does not go away or if the symptoms are very intense, the gynaecologist may recommend other treatments, such as topical hormone therapy that includes the use of vaginal ointments or creams.

It is important that, together with the treatment prescribed by the doctor, healthy gynaecological habits are followed.

At Farmaciasdirect we have a wide range of products to treat vaginal dryness and its associated symptoms.
