Alopecia

What is alopecia?

Alopecia is an abnormal loss of hair that can affect the scalp or other areas of the body where hair is present, such as the eyelashes, armpits, genital region and beard. If it is on the head, it is called baldness.

Types of alopecia

Alopecia can be classified into two groups: scarring alopecia, with destruction of the hair follicle and therefore irreversible, and non-scarring forms, which are potentially reversible.

The most common form is androgenic alopecia, also called androgenic alopecia or common baldness, which accounts for 95% of cases. It mainly affects men, and less frequently women.

How to treat alopecia?

There are various products and medications for the treatment of alopecia, depending on the causes of alopecia.

Among them, these are the best known active ingredients for the treatment of androgenic baldness:

Minoxidil

Minoxidil is a medicine that can be bought without prescription and can be found in liquid, foam and shampoo form. To be most effective, apply the product to the skin of the scalp once a day for women and twice a day for men.

Treatment with minoxidil should last at least six months to notice the effects, or in some people even longer. If the treatment is successful, the drug should be continued indefinitely to maintain the benefits.

Adverse effects of minoxidil that may occur: scalp irritation and unwanted hair growth if applied to areas other than the head.

Finasteride

Finasteride is a drug that requires a private prescription and is mainly used in men. The treatment consists of one pill a day.

For finasteride treatment to be effective over time, it should be taken for life.

Adverse effects: Rarely, decreased sexual desire and function may occur. Women who are pregnant or likely to become pregnant should avoid contact with this medicine.

How to treat alopecia in women?

Alopecia in women is less common than in men and can be due to different causes:

- Androgenic alopecia of hormonal and genetic origin, which is the most common, as is the case for men.

- Stress hair loss: a large volume tends to fall out but it is a reversible loss.

- Alopecia Areata: autoimmune alopecia that usually forms bald patches in a circle and is treated with corticoids and immunosuppressants.
