Menopause

What is menopause?

The menopause is a natural process in a woman's life as a result of the depletion of eggs and the end of ovulation cycles.

It is the last menstruation and usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, although it may occur earlier.

It is considered premenopausal from the onset of irregularities, but the oestrogen level is usually not yet affected. Postmenopause is the period that begins after the menopause, but cannot be confirmed until the next 12 months of amenorrhoea.

When does the menopause begin?

As mentioned above, the menopause usually occurs around the age of 50, although this is not always the case.

At the beginning of the process, your ovaries stop producing oestrogen and start producing less of other reproductive hormones, such as progesterone. Without these hormones, your periods stop and pregnancy can no longer occur.

Symptoms of menopause

Women may experience different menopausal symptoms, which become noticeable as the number of oestrogens decreases. The intensity of these symptoms can also vary and in some cases are barely noticeable.

The most important menopausal symptoms are:

- - Irregularities and changes in menstrual cycles until they disappear completely.

- Hot flushes, the most common symptom.

- Night sweats.

Other symptoms:

- - Sleep disturbance, vaginal dryness, mood changes, mood alterations, decreased sexual appetite, joint pain, hair loss, weight gain and loss of bone density.

How long does the menopause last?

Postmenopausal symptoms can last from months to several years depending on the woman.

When does the menopause end?

The menopause begins and ends at the same time, as it occurs only when it is certified that a woman's fertile life has ended and she is no longer able to become pregnant.
