What is a vaginal infection?

Vaginal infections are infections that affect the external female reproductive system, the vagina.

Causes

Vaginal infections can have a number of causes: lack of hygiene of the area or incorrect hygiene, underwear that is too tight and can encourage the growth of fungi, frequent use of antibiotics that damage the vaginal flora, and anything that irritates the area and makes it prone to micro-organisms.

Symptoms

The main symptoms of an infection that warn us of a vaginal infection are: pain during sexual intercourse, irritation and/or itching in the area, slight bleeding and pain or burning when urinating.

Types of vaginal infection

There are basically 4 types of vaginal infections that can affect women of any age:

Candidiasis or vaginal yeast. This type of infection affects up to 3 out of 4 women at some point, what you should know is that it is not considered a sexually transmitted disease, but when it multiplies uncontrollably it produces infection and the following symptoms:

  • Thick, white, cottage cheese-like vaginal discharge.

  • itching or itching (especially during sex)

  • Irritation of the vulva

  • Vaginal rash

Bacterial vaginosis is an imbalance in the vaginal bacterial flora and is the most common infection.

Trichomoniasis: this is a parasite that is transmitted during sexual intercourse, men can transmit it and not suffer from the disease.

Chlamydia: is also sexually transmitted.

Treatment for vaginal yeast
