What is Optialerg and what is it used for?

It is a medicine formulated with naphazoline, a sympathomimetic substance that has a vasoconstrictor action, with a rapid decongestive effect on the inflamed mucosa of the conjunctiva.

Its use is indicated for the temporary relief of congestion, redness and mild irritation in the eyes of irritative and/or allergic origin, caused by external agents, such as tobacco smoke, dust, pollution, dry or stuffy environments, sunlight, chlorinated water or sea water, reading or work requiring prolonged fixation of the eyes.

Who it is intended for

Suitable for adults and adolescents over 12 years of age.

People over 65 years of age should only use this medicine under medical supervision.

Directions for use

The recommended dosage is 2 to 4 drops according to the needs of the affected eye(s). Treatment should not exceed 3-5 days.

Contraindications

Do not use Optialerg:

  • In children under 12 years of age.

  • If you are allergic to naphazoline or other adrenergic medicines, or to any of the excipients.

  • If you have narrow-angle glaucoma of the eyes.

  • In pregnancy and breast-feeding, unless prescribed by a doctor.

Side effects

Optialerg may cause side effects, as with all medicines. In particular, the following have been observed: pupil dilation, increased pressure inside the eye (intraocular), effects due to absorption into the body (increases in blood pressure, cardiac disorders and increased blood sugar), headache and nausea.

  • Rarely, itching after application has been observed.

  • Possible rare occurrence of continuous redness and irritation of the eye.

  • Unknown frequency: conjunctivitis, eye pain.

  • Very rarely: opaque areas on the cornea.

  • In predisposed patients and with use in greater quantity or frequency than recommended, palpitations, tremor, weakness and sweating may occur.

  • Allergic reaction to any of the ingredients may also occur.

Composition

The active ingredients of Optialerg are: antazoline phosphate and naphazoline hydrochloride. Each ml of eye drops solution contains 5 mg of antazoline phosphate and 0.25 mg of naphazoline hydrochloride.

Other excipients: macrogol 8000, polyvinyl alcohol, sodium chloride, edetate disodium, benzalkonium chloride 50%, sodium hydroxide and/or hydrochloric acid and purified water.

Pharmaceutical advice

This medicinal product is supplied as eye drops with a colourless solution in a dropper bottle.

Do not wear contact lenses while taking this medicine. They should be removed and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.

Do not use this medicine if you notice that the solution changes colour or becomes cloudy. Discard the bottle one month after opening.
