The cellular processes responsible for ageing are intensified in older dogs, which is why the main functions must be protected. Neutering favours weight gain, and decreased activity levels cause a predisposition to muscle loss and difficulty in joint mobility, so we must adapt the diet to this stage of life.
Benefits
Control of body weight. As a consequence of sterilisation and the decrease in activity due to age, the energy in the diet must be controlled to prevent overweight. A high protein, low carbohydrate diet helps to maintain optimal body condition. To satisfy the appetite, the food has a high fibre content, and on the other hand, the L-carnitine supplement limits the accumulation of fatty tissue.
Moderate calorie intake. The low levels of fat and increased amount of fibre help to reduce the energy in the diet, thus limiting calorie intake.
Dental tartar control. The formulation of the diet helps to limit the formation of dental plaque and tartar, ensuring good oral health.
Regulation of glucose and total sugar intake. The low starch content helps to ensure stable blood glucose levels.
