Combat spring asthenia

With the arrival of spring, a temporary situation that usually lasts a couple of weeks can occur: spring asthenia.

What is spring asthenia?

We can consider it the adaptation phase from winter to spring, when the clocks go forward by one hour and temperatures usually rise, often causing some of the following symptoms:

  • Tiredness and lack of energy.
  • Difficulty falling asleep.
  • Anxiety and stress.
  • Irritability.
  • Problems concentrating.
  • Loss of appetite.

More than half the population suffers these symptoms when spring arrives and, although it does not require treatment, we will give you some tips to help the body adapt as quickly as possible.

Tips to combat spring asthenia

  • Do physical exercise: Practising 30 minutes of physical activity will help us rest and feel better.
  • Keep fixed times for going to bed and getting up: It is important to rest for at least 8 hours and keep regular bedtime and wake-up times.
  • Stay hydrated: Due to the increase in temperature, which is one of the symptoms of spring asthenia, it is important to stay hydrated by drinking around one and a half litres of water a day.
  • Avoid using screens: Devices such as the television, computer or mobile phone inhibit melatonin production, affecting the sleep cycle.
  • Avoid alcohol and coffee: Trying to fight tiredness by drinking coffee can worsen asthenia because of poor sleep quality.

There are different foods that will help us combat spring asthenia, including the following:

  • Cereals: They will provide us with energy and will not cause tiredness after eating.
  • Nuts: Foods such as walnuts, almonds, peanuts, hazelnuts and nuts in general have a high energy content, helping to combat asthenia.
  • Fruit and vegetables: These provide us with the vitamins, antioxidants and minerals needed to combat spring asthenia, as they contain tryptophan, which contributes to an increase in serotonin and improves mood. Some foods that contain tryptophan are banana, pineapple, spinach or plums.
  • Chocolate: It helps improve our mood because it facilitates the generation of endorphins. The purer the chocolate, the more effective it will be; ideally it should contain more than 70% cocoa.
  • Supplements: If, in addition to the foods mentioned above, you would like extra help to reduce tiredness, you can choose a supplement. At Farmaciasdirect we have the following supplements to help you combat spring asthenia:
