Colds and Temperature Changes: Myths and Facts About Their Relationship

With sudden changes in temperature, you have probably heard phrases like "wrap up warm or you'll catch a cold" or "don't go out with wet hair or you'll get ill". In today's post, we look at the most common myths and facts surrounding colds, the importance of protecting our immune defences and how to prevent and relieve their symptoms. Keep reading!

Everything you need to know about colds and temperature changes

One of the most widespread myths is that cold weather on its own can cause colds. The reality is that colds are caused by viruses, with rhinoviruses being the most common.

These viruses spread from person to person through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes, or through contact with contaminated surfaces.

So... why are colds more common in winter? There are several reasons; in colder climates, people tend to spend more time indoors, which makes it easier for viruses to spread.

In addition, dry air, both outdoors in cold weather and indoors with heating, can dry out the mucous membranes in the nose, making them more susceptible to viral infections.

Another very popular myth - and one you ask us about a lot - is that going out with wet hair will make you catch a cold. The answer is no!

As we mentioned at the beginning of the post, although it is true that when the body gets cold (in this case because it is cold and we have wet hair) the immune system can weaken temporarily, which may increase the likelihood of "coming down with a cold", colds are caused by viruses and not simply by having wet hair.

On the other hand, and in line with what we have been explaining, although changes in temperature are not the direct cause of colds, maintaining a strong immune system is essential for preventing infections.

A balanced diet, regular exercise, proper rest and immune support through certain supplements, especially during cold season, are all essential.

How to treat colds and their symptoms

  1. Pranarôm Aromaforce Defensas Naturales: this is a solution made with essential oils that strengthens the body's natural defences. Essential oils such as eucalyptus radiata and ravintsara are known for their antiviral and antibacterial properties. Pranarôm Aromaforce Solución Defensas Naturales can be applied to the chest or inhaled through a diffuser to help protect the respiratory system and strengthen the immune system.
  2. Aboca Fitonasal Spray Concentrado: a common problem during the colder months is nasal congestion. Aboca Fitonasal is a concentrated spray that helps relieve nasal congestion without the need for chemical decongestants. It is formulated with natural ingredients that create a protective barrier on the nasal mucosa, preventing contact with irritating or infectious external agents. In addition, continued use does not cause the "rebound effect" sometimes associated with other nasal decongestants.
  3. Cold and flu medicines: Existen activos como paracetamol or chlorphenamine, known for helping to treat headaches, fever and nasal congestion, all of which are very common with colds. They are available on the Farmaciasdirect website in different formats: granulated sachets, such as Frenadol Complex, Frenadol Forte, Frenadol Junior, Frenadol Descongestivo, as well as capsules, syrup and drinkable sachets.

Although it is a myth that changes in temperature are the direct cause of colds, it is very important to keep the immune system protected.

A balanced diet, good hydration and the use of supplements that strengthen our natural defences may help to prevent colds and other respiratory problems.
