Tips to protect your pet from the cold

We are still experiencing low temperatures, and this can affect our furry friend without us even realising it. The cold can be difficult for some pets, especially those with shorter coats or those that are not used to the cold. Find out how you can help your dog in cold weather.

How can you help your dog in cold weather?

Maintaining the right body temperature is essential for their wellbeing, nobody likes being cold! So, here are some tips to keep your pet comfortable and safe during cold days:

1. Use dog clothing

Small breeds, dogs with short coats and older dogs in particular can wear a dog coat to help them cope with the cold. Just make sure it is comfortable and covers their abdomen properly, as this is one of the areas where they tend to feel the cold the most.

2. Avoid prolonged exposure

Limit the time your dog spends outdoors when it is very cold. If temperatures are below zero or it is even snowing, walks should be shorter. Remember that at this time of year you also need to look after their paws, not just in summer with high temperatures, especially if they walk on ice or snow. We recommend using dog boots, so nothing stops them from enjoying a good walk!

3. Paw protection

Ice and the salt used on the streets can irritate your dog's paw pads. Make sure you clean their paws after every walk and, if necessary, use a cream to protect them and treat any possible irritation.

Our recommendation? crema para almohadillas Adofilm de Calier. Thanks to its formula rich in active ingredients such as aloe vera, it helps repair, regenerate and heal cracked paws or small wounds caused by the cold.

4. Feed them properly

During the winter months, your furry friend may need a larger amount of food, especially if they spend more time outdoors.

Those extra calories can help them maintain their body temperature. That said, make sure you give them quality food, suited to their needs and rich in nutrients.

5. Keep their bed and resting area warm

Make sure the area where your furry friend rests at home is warm and cosy, especially at bedtime. Cover them with a blanket and, if you can, place their bed on a rug. This will help maintain their body temperature and keep them more comfortable while they sleep.

6. Hydration

Although many dogs tend to drink less water in winter, it is very important that they stay hydrated. If the water freezes outside, make sure you always have water available inside the house.

7. Be careful with sudden temperature changes

If your furry friend moves from a very cold environment to a very warm one (and vice versa), they may feel uncomfortable. Avoid sudden exposure to the heat from the heating or to cold draughts.

8. Regular health check

In winter, some dog breeds (especially large dogs or very elderly dogs) are often more prone to certain health issues, such as joint problems or respiratory problems.

A regular visit to the vet can be helpful to make sure your dog is ready for the cold.

9. Suitable exercise

Although the cold can make dogs move less, it is important that they continue exercising to stay active and healthy.

Make sure they exercise in suitable and safe places, such as indoors or in areas protected from extreme cold.

10. Avoid leaving your dog outside for too long

Although many of them are adapted to the cold, it is not advisable to leave them outside for long periods. Remember that even if you use dog clothing to keep them warm, extreme cold can be dangerous for their health, causing hypothermia or frostbite in serious cases.

If you follow these tips, your pet will be much more comfortable and safe during cold days. I hope your furry friend enjoys winter in a warm and happy way!
