Properties and benefits of rhodiola

Rhodiola has grown in popularity in recent years thanks to its properties, which support health and wellbeing naturally. Today, we explain everything you need to know about it and why it is so beneficial. Keep reading!

What is rhodiola?

Rhodiola is a plant called Rhodiola Rosea, known as golden root or Arctic root, which grows in cold, mountainous areas of Asia and Europe. Because of its properties, it has played a leading role in traditional medicine in these regions for centuries.

In addition, this plant is rich in rosavins and salidroside, active compounds that increase physical and mental performance in difficult situations. Thanks to its adaptogenic properties, it is very useful for combating stress.

What is rhodiola used for?

As it is an adaptogenic active ingredient, it allows the body to “adapt” better to different situations of physical, mental and emotional stress. The benefits of rhodiola therefore include:

  • Helping to manage stress and chronic fatigue.
  • Contributing to better memory and concentration.
  • Improving endurance and physical and/or mental fatigue.
  • Supporting people in cases of anxiety, depression or emotional imbalance.

Properties of rhodiola

We already know what the rhodiola plant can do and what its benefits are, but how does it do it? What makes it adaptogenic?

Rhodiola acts on the glands responsible for the stress response (the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis), helping to:

  • Lower cortisol levels (the stress hormone).
  • Regulate levels of dopamine and serotonin (the “feel-good” hormones).
  • Because it is antioxidant, it protects cells from the stress and oxidative damage produced by periods of anxiety and nervousness.

How to take rhodiola

Rhodiola can be found in the form of capsules, tablets or extracts. It is recommended to take it in the morning or at midday, not at night, as it can be slightly stimulating and may not support restful sleep.

Can you take rhodiola at night?

It is not recommended to take rhodiola at night. The reason is that rhodiola can cause insomnia, agitation or sleep disturbances if consumed in the evening due to its energising and stimulating effect. That is why it is advisable to take it in the morning or during the first half of the day to make the most of its benefits.

Side effects of rhodiola

Like any food supplement or medicine, rhodiola may cause adverse reactions. It can cause nervousness, insomnia (if taken at night) or headache, as it acts on the nervous system.

We recommend consulting your pharmacist or doctor before starting to take it.
