Hair loss: types, causes and treatments to effectively stop it

The change of season, periods of stress and anxiety, contact with external agents or hormonal issues are some of the causes behind hair loss. If you cannot tell the types of hair loss apart and do not know how to stop it, do not miss today’s post! We explain which treatment to follow to restore the density and volume of your hair.

Hair loss: why does it happen?

First of all: stay calm! Believe it or not, and even if it sounds exaggerated, losing 50 to 100 hairs a day is completely normal. Hair goes through different phases:

  • 1st growth or anagen phase, which is when the hair starts to grow.
  • 2nd transition or catagen phase, when growth stops.
  • 3rd shedding or telogen phase, when the hair starts to fall out so the cycle can begin again.

That is why we said that hair loss is normal, as long as it happens in moderate amounts.

When should we be concerned? When the duration of the 1st phase, which is the growth phase, becomes shorter and quickly moves to the 3rd phase, in other words, the shedding phase.

Types of hair loss

First of all, it is worth pointing out that there are two types of hair loss: progressive and reactive.

Progressive hair loss

In this case, hair loss and loss of density are caused by hormonal or hereditary factors, which can lead to total hair loss in certain areas.

Unlike reactive hair loss, it is most common in men, although it can also occur in women in some cases. And how do we know whether we are experiencing progressive hair loss and not reactive hair loss?

Because for more than 6 months, we notice that we are losing more than 100 hairs a day and, in addition, our hair is finer and less dense in certain areas of the scalp. Seborrhoea is also common, characterised by excessive oiliness in the hair.

To treat progressive hair loss, it is advisable to use products that contain active ingredients such as Finasteride, Dutasteride or Minoxidil, as they help to stimulate hair growth, extending the growth phase and slowing down alopecia. At Farmaciasdirect we recommend Regaine hair foam; and you can also find medicines for alopecia, with these active ingredients to treat hair loss.

Reactive hair loss

Reactive hair loss, although some men may also suffer from it, is a problem that mainly affects women. It usually occurs 2 or 3 months after going through situations such as stress, anxiety, seasonal changes, diets, nutritional imbalances or the postpartum period, which lead to losing more than 100 hairs a day.

As for its causes, it may be vascular (poor vascularisation of the hair bulb) or nutritional (lack of nutrients needed for growth).

To boost growth and slow hair loss, we recommend following a haircare routine made up of an anti-hair loss lotion, in ampoule or spray format, a food supplement rich in vitamins and minerals to nourish from within, and a shampoo to strengthen and revitalise the hair.If you notice that your hair has lost strength or density, at Farmaciasdirect we recommend Iraltone Capilar Resilience Booster and Iraltone Capilar Efflu Booster, two hair supplements formulated with active ingredients that strengthen the hair fibre and help reactivate growth from the root.
