How to Protect Sun Spots, Moles and Freckles

Summer will always be the time of year to show off a tan and healthy, beautiful, cared-for skin. But what aboutskin pigmentation? We explainwhat to do to protect sun spots, freckles and moles from the sunand prevent their appearance.

We have repeated it time and time again: do not forget your sun protection. Whether it is spring, summer, autumn or winter. Because the skin remembers, and our skin’s sun spots, moles and freckles are proof of that.

What are sun spots?

Sun spots are areas of the skin that have a darker colour compared with the natural tone of the surrounding skin.

These spots are the result of excessive melanin production, the pigment responsible for skin colour.

There are several factors that can contribute to the development of sun spots, such as prolonged sun exposure without protection, hormonal changes and genetic predisposition.

The best treatment for sun spots

If you already have sun spots, there are treatment options to reduce their appearance. Some options include:

Depigmenting creams

Depigmenting creams contain active ingredients that help reduce melanin production and lighten sun spots.

These products usually contain ingredients such as kojic acid, glycolic acid or hydroquinone. It is important to follow the instructions for use and be consistent in their application to achieve effective results.

Professional treatments

If sun spots persist or are deeper, you may need professional treatments. Some options include chemical peels, laser therapy or intense pulsed light (IPL), and microdermabrasion.

These treatments help remove the superficial layers of the skin and stimulate collagen production, which can improve the appearance of sun spots.

How can you prevent sun spots on the skin?

Prevention is essential to avoid the formation of sun spots. Here are some measures you can take to prevent sun spots:

Use sun protection

Daily use of a good sunscreen is essential to protect your skin from UV rays. Make sure you choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30.

Apply sunscreen generously to all exposed areas of your body and reapply it every two hours or after swimming or sweating.

Additional protective measures

As well as sunscreen, you can take other steps to protect your skin from the sun. Wear long-sleeved clothing, wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses to cover your skin and avoid direct sun exposure for too long.

Seek shade during peak hours of solar radiation and avoid artificial tanning in sunbeds. As we have mentioned, to avoid and treat sun spots it is important to use high sun protection, avoid the hours of strongest radiation and include a depigmenting treatment in your beauty routine.

They can appear when you least expect them, which is why it is important to apply sunscreen when doing outdoor sport too. What will we achieve?Fade spots  and prevent them from appearing.

As well as combating photoageing and restoring the skin’s natural texture. And with regard to your depigmenting routine, our recommendation is the Pigment Zero range by MartiDerm, made up of ampoules, day and night creams, serum, stick and mask.

All are formulated with active ingredients that combat skin hyperpigmentation, reduce melanin production and contribute to cell renewal.

Freckles and moles caused by the sun

First of all, we should mention that freckles and moles, although they sometimes share common features, are not the same thing at all.

Freckles appear due to an accumulation of pigment on the skin, but without relief, because of excessive sun exposure with unsuitable sunscreens. Meanwhile, moles appear on our skin when we are born or during puberty, due to an overproduction of melanin.

Neither has to be dangerous to our health, as long as we take care of them and check our body from time to time for the possible appearance of new ones.

But importantly, we say that moles are not dangerous as long as their appearance does not change, whether in colour, shape or if they become itchy or bleed.

Tips for caring for your skin in the sun

What can we do to care for freckles and moles? Keep reading, we explain everything step by step. First of all and most importantly, use high sun protection(SPF 50+) to avoid and prevent them from appearing.

And what if freckles or a mole have already appeared? We should keep applying sunscreen for freckles, especially on that area, to prevent, for example, the mole from spreading. And what if I have lots of moles?

In that case our recommendation is that you see your dermatologist and avoid exposure between 12 noon and 4 pm. Remember that this is the part of the day when radiation is strongest, and therefore the damage to our skin is greater too.

A parasol and cap or hat are your greatest allies. Our moles and freckles need maximum protection and, as a complement to SPF 50+ sunscreen, we recommend taking a parasol to cover yourself or an accessory to cover your head.

With that you will not only avoid the appearance of freckles and moles, but also spots. Can I take contraceptives or antibiotics and go in the sun? It is not ideal or the most advisable, since some of them encourage the appearance of freckles.

So, to avoid it at all costs, the best thing is not to expose ourselves to the sun. And as more specific skincare, do not forget to include in your beauty routine (if you have not already done so) good hydration and exfoliation.

This will help keep our skin nourished, hydrated and renewed. Do you not know which products to choose or what to do to protect spots, moles or freckles and prevent them from appearing?
