How to combat the feeling of tired legs

During these days when we must be responsible and stay at home to help flatten the curve and put an end to this health crisis, not moving enough or spending too much time sitting down is taking its toll on our body, isn't it? You may be suffering from tired legs syndrome. Discover the symptoms and how to treat it. Our body suffers if we do not do the daily physical activity needed to support health. Why? Because of the sedentary behaviour our body is used to during work and domestic routines. And now, in the situation we are facing, where we must stay at home and go out only when strictly necessary, we hardly walk or exercise our body, although we have also seen plenty of people on social media getting started with home workouts.

Tired legs

Spending the whole day sitting down and moving from the sofa to the bed and from the bed to the sofa is causing consequences in our body. One of them is the feeling of tired legs, which, although it is not a serious health danger, causes discomfort such as tingling or painful pressure.

What can you do to combat this feeling?

  • Hydration: drinking 2 litres of water a day not only helps protect the body from urinary infections, delay ageing or stabilise kidney function. It also helps combat that feeling of tired legs.
  • Raise your legs: once the working day or household tasks are over, instead of sitting down, try lying down and raising your legs. This helps venous return, moving blood from the lower part of the body back to the heart.
  • Balanced diet: during these days when we are spending more time at home than ever, many of you are using spare time to cook... and eat. To help your legs feel lighter, it is essential to choose a diet rich in fibre and low in salt and saturated fats. This supports blood circulation.
  • Wear light clothing: one good thing about not going out is that we can spend the day in comfortable clothes. Choose loose, light garments and avoid high-heeled shoes. Tight clothing, especially around the calves, encourages heaviness and swelling in the legs.
  • Shower with cold water: now that the good weather is beginning, take the opportunity to swap hot water in the shower for cold water, or at least slightly cooler water than before, as this helps relieve and soothe tired calves. Afterwards, massage the area with cold water, starting at the feet and moving up to the thighs. Once the massage is finished, hydrate your skin with moisturising cream.

Exercise at home

In recent days we have seen that many of you have been encouraged to follow live social media classes for glutes, abs, legs and more. It is a great idea. Even if we cannot go out walking, go to the gym or exercise in the park, we can still work out at home. All you need is to prepare the space, grab a towel, a large bottle of water, music, a mat and any sports items you have, such as weights or bands. Remember that the human body is made to move. That is why we must do everything possible so that having to stay at home does not become a problem for our body.
