How long does a cold last? Phases and usual recovery time for the common cold

A cold, although it is one of the most common conditions at any age and is usually mild, can be bothersome because of the symptoms it causes: nasal congestion, sneezing, a sore throat or general discomfort. In this article, we explain what to do to recover and how long a cold lasts. Keep reading!

Stages and duration of a cold

In general, although it can depend on factors such as whether our immune system is weakened or the environment we are in (very cold climates or if we are in contact with someone who also has a cold), symptoms usually last between 7 and 10 days, because, as it is caused by different types of virus (mainly rhinoviruses), our body needs time to fight this infection and recover again.

  1. Incubation period (1 to 2 days): the virus enters the body, but symptoms have not yet appeared.
  2. Initial phase (days 1 to 3): throat irritation appears, along with frequent sneezing and a feeling of tiredness and fatigue.
  3. Acute phase (days 3 to 5): nasal congestion becomes more intense, with plenty of mucus and general discomfort.
  4. Recovery phase (days 6 to 10): symptoms gradually begin to improve until they disappear.

How long does a cold last without a fever?

It is very common in adults and its symptoms last between 5 and 7 days, although in many cases they last longer. Why? Not getting enough rest when we feel unwell, not staying hydrated (essential to prevent the nasal lining from drying out), stress, being in enclosed spaces with poor ventilation or very high heating, or not using specific products to stop the nose from becoming blocked can all be reasons why cold symptoms last longer.

All of this, without forgetting the importance of looking after our diet and including in our routine foods that protect and strengthen our defences, such as oranges, broccoli or red peppers, which are rich in Vitamin C, ginger for its anti-inflammatory power, or honey thanks to its antibacterial, soothing and antioxidant action.

How to relieve cold symptoms

Frenadol

You can find it in different formats: capsules such as Frenadol Descongestivo or sachets such as Frenadol Complex, Frenadol Junior o Frenadol Forte.

You can also use nasal cleansers:

Rhinomer Plus Fuerza 1

Its isotonic, preservative-free formula makes it a perfect option to use several times a day, as it does not irritate.

Aboca Fitonasal Pediatric Spray

For the little ones at home, Aboca Fitonasal Pediatric Spray, formulated with plant extracts, cleanses, hydrates and protects the nasal mucosa without causing stinging.

During a child’s cold, this spray helps reduce congestion and improves breathing, making it easier to rest at night. In addition, as it does not contain vasoconstrictors or harsh pharmacological components, it can be used several times a day with complete safety.

Resting for at least 8 hours a day, drinking plenty of fluids (water, herbal teas or broths), using humidifiers or avoiding sudden changes in temperature combined with daily nasal cleansing using Aboca Fitonasal Pediatric or Rhinomer Plus Fuerza 1 sprays, will help fight nasal congestion and the symptoms associated with a cold more quickly. With the right care, your body will recover in a few days and you will feel well again.
