Tips to stop your lips from cracking

Cold weather, rain, wind and even the sun can make the skin on the lips lose moisture. The result? Dry, chapped lips. To stop that from happening, get ahead of the cold with these tips to stop your lips from cracking. Despite their pink colour, lips do not contain melanin. What does that mean? That they are less protected than other areas when it comes to sun damage. Their skin is also very thin and delicate, which makes them more sensitive to external aggressors such as cold weather and wind.

Tips to stop your lips from becoming chapped

Biting our nails, touching our lips too often with our hands or licking them to get a false feeling of hydration are unconscious habits we repeat countless times throughout the day. Not only are they unhelpful, they can also lead to cuts and damage on the lips. So here are some tips to stop your lips from cracking:

  • The main recommendation for preventing chapped lips is to keep them covered with an emollient lip balm. In other words, the classic cocoa-butter style balm.

Some have mild hydrating properties, but lip balms are not designed to be absorbed by the skin like a body lotion. They are designed to stay on the lips and form a protective shield that prevents moisture loss.

  • Gently exfoliating the lips before applying lip balm is a great idea. Exfoliation removes dead, dry and flaky skin and leaves a smooth surface ready for the lip balm.
  • Covering your lips with a scarf when you have to go outside in winter is another piece of advice we give, and we are sure it will help you prevent dry lips. Speaking from experience.
  • Be careful with lip products containing skin irritants such as menthol, camphor, mint, citrus or added fragrance. These ingredients do not benefit the lips and can end up causing problems. So... always read the labels carefully before applying them.
  • Look after your diet and drink plenty of water. Hydration is key to our health and the lips are no exception. To help prevent dryness, choose foods rich in vitamin B, such as vegetables and spinach, and keep your body hydrated by drinking plenty of water consistently.
