Properties of lactic acid and its health benefits

In a skincare market that has evolved significantly in recent years, increasingly innovative products keep appearing. One area that has progressed especially fast is exfoliating actives, particularly acids used for chemical exfoliation. Today we are focusing on lactic acid, which stands out for being gentle yet effective, making it suitable for skin that may not tolerate stronger acids.

What is lactic acid and what is it used for?

Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid, also known as an AHA, obtained through the fermentation of lactose. When it is applied topically in cosmetics, it helps improve skin texture thanks to its exfoliating and hydrating action, while also enhancing the skin's overall appearance.

These benefits make it one of my favourite recommendations for sensitive skin, because lactic acid, unlike other AHA acids such as glycolic acid, has a much gentler effect. That means we can exfoliate and achieve visible results without causing irritation in skin that is prone to sensitivity.

Properties of lactic acid

  • Gentle but effective exfoliation: it helps remove dead skin cells, leaving the skin smoother, brighter and more even.
  • Hydration: it helps retain water in the epidermis, acting as a humectant and improving elasticity.
  • Cell renewal: this is perhaps the best-known feature of AHAs and one of the most appreciated. It stimulates skin renewal, making way for new cells and helping eliminate dead ones.
  • More even skin tone: it supports radiance and helps improve the appearance of marks, dark spots and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
  • It prepares the skin for the next product in your routine, helping active ingredients penetrate better and work more effectively.

What are the benefits of lactic acid?

  • Brighter, more even-looking skin.
  • Improved skin texture, helping reduce roughness, dryness, unevenness and small imperfections.
  • It softens fine lines by removing the upper layers of dead skin cells.
  • Good tolerance; as mentioned above, it is a gentle and highly effective acid that does not usually cause irritation.
  • It supports the barrier function by helping keep the skin hydrated and better protected.

How should you use lactic acid correctly?

When deciding how to introduce it into your routine, it is always best to get advice from a skincare expert, but in short we could say that:

  • If you have never tried it before, start with low concentrations so your skin can adapt gradually. There is no need to rush.
  • It is essential to use sun protection every morning.
  • It is best used in your evening routine.
  • You can choose the format that suits you best, as lactic acid is available in serums, toners, creams and even masks.
