What is NiQuitin Clear patches and what is it used for?

NiQuitin Clear are nicotine-releasing patchesto help people stop smoking. This type of treatment is called Nicotine Replacement Therapy.

It comes in a pack of 7 patches.

Who it is for

For people over theage of 18 who want to stop smoking .

How to use

Use a new patch every day. The patch should only be used once for 24 hours. Do not use more than the recommended dose.

The recommended daily dose will depend on the stage and level of nicotine dependence.

Heavy smokers (more than 10 cigarettes a day):

For 6 weeks

Phase 1, NiQuitin Clear 21 mg/24 h, 1 patch/day

Weeks 7 and 8

Phase 2, NiQuitin Clear 14 mg/24 h, 1 patch/day

Weeks 9 and 10

Phase 3, NiQuitin Clear 7 mg/24 h, 1 patch per day

After 10 weeks

Patches may be continued if necessary* .

 

Lightly dependent smokers (less than 10 cigarettes per day):

For 6 weeks

Phase 2, NiQuitin Clear 14 mg/24 h, 1 patch per day

Weeks 7 and 8

Phase 3, NiQuitin Clear 7 mg/24 h, 1 patch per day

After 8 weeks

Patches can be continued if needed* *Patches can be continued if needed*.

*Patches can be continued after the recommended 8 to 10 weeks if you need them to stay smoke-free. However, if you are still using them after 9 months, consult a health care professional.

Contraindications

Do not use Niquitin Clear 14 mg patches:

  • In children under 12 years of age.
  • If you are a non-smoker or occasional smoker.
  • If you are allergic to nicotine or to any of the ingredients in this medicine.

Side effects

As with all medicines on the market, Niquitin Clear 14 mg transdermal patches may cause side effects. In this case, quitting smoking itself may cause some symptoms, such as feelings of weakness, dizziness, headache, cough and flu-like symptoms.

Other symptoms that may also be related to withdrawal symptoms associated with quitting smoking are: mood swings, insomnia, sleep disturbances, lack of concentration, feeling depressed, irritability, anxiety, drowsiness, restlessness or nervousness.

  • Very common:skin reactions in the area where the patch is applied,sleep disturbances,including insomnia and abnormal dreams, nausea, vomiting,headache,dizziness.
  • Frequent:nervousness,tremor,difficulty breathing,sore or swollen throat,cough,indigestion, stomach pain, diarrhoea, constipation, dry mouth,sweating,joint pain, muscle pain, chest pain, pain in the limbs,weakness or fatigue.
  • Rare:allergic reaction,increased heart rate, flu symptoms.

Precaution s

Consultyour healthcare professionalbefore you start using Niquitin Clear transdermal patches:

  • If you are inhospital due to heart attack, severe heart rhythm problems or stroke.You should try to stop smoking without using nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) unless your doctor tells you to use it .Once you leave hospital, you can use NRT as normal.

  • If you havediabetes.You should monitor your blood sugar levels more often than usual when you start using Niquitin Clear. Your insulin or medication needs may change.

  • If you have hadallergic reactionsinvolving swelling of the lips, face and throat or itchy skin rash. The use of NRT can sometimes trigger this type of reaction.

  • If you have hadallergic eczema or dermatitis. You may have a reaction to the patches.

  • If you have stomach or duodenal ulcersor an inflamed oesophagus or throat (the passage between your mouth and stomach). NRT may make your symptoms worse.

  • If you have a history ofepilepsy (seizures).

  • If you have a history ofcardiovasculardisease (such asheart disease, angina or high blood pressure) and want to use NiQuitin Clear patches in combination with NiQuitin tablets or chewing gum.

  • If you havesevere liver or kidney problems. You may be more susceptible to side effects.

  • If you have an uncontrolled overactive thyroid gland or pheochromocytoma (a tumour of the adrenal gland that can affect blood pressure). Nicotine can make your symptoms worse.

  • If you have any concerns about being dependent on this product or if you think you are dependent on this product.

Compositio n

The active substance in Niquitin Clear 14 mg Transdermal Patches is nicotine. The other excipients are: Ethylene Vinyl Acetate copolymer, Polyethylene Terephthalate, polyethylene film, polyisobutylene and printing ink.

Pharmaceutical advice

As your body adjusts to being smoke-free,reduce the dosage of patches used until you no longer need them. This reduction programme allows you to gradually overcome your body's nicotine needs. It is advisable to apply the patch on different areas to avoid irritation of the patch.
