Nicotine patches work by delivering a measured dose of nicotine through the skin. You will become less dependent on nicotine as you switch to patches containing a lower dose over several weeks.
There are many types of patches of different strengths on the market. Always follow the instructions on the package leaflet.
The 16-hour patch works well for light smokers and the average smoker. It is less likely to cause side effects. However, it does not deliver nicotine at night, so it may not be useful if you have withdrawal symptoms in the early morning.
The 24-hour patch provides a constant dose of nicotine, which prevents highs and lows. With this type of patch, early morning withdrawal symptoms are avoided. However, it may have more side effects.
