Omega 3 supplements: what you need to know

Theomega 3 is a fatty acid that offers a wide range of benefits for the body. However, this fat is not produced by itself and, therefore, we need to consume foods or supplements rich in this component. We tell you about it in this post. Keep reading!

Theomega 3 is a type of fatty acid that strengthens neurons and the heart. This type of polyunsaturated fat is not produced by our body on its own, so we must obtain it through a proper diet(between 5% and 10% of the calories we consume)or through the intake of omega-3 supplements under medical prescription.

Types of omega 3

Omega-3 fatty acids are of three different kinds:

  • Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA): it is obtained from seeds that produce oils and oleaginous products.
  • Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA): present in some varieties of oily fish, seafood and algae.
  • Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA): appears in some types of oily fish and in breast milk.

Within products rich in omega-3, we find two types, according to their origin:

  • Fish: herring, albacore tuna, mackerel, salmon, sardines, trout...
  • Plant-based foods: oils, soya, tofu, walnuts, chia...

Benefits of omega 3

This healthy fat offers a series of benefits for our body:

  • Cancer prevention.
  • Slightly lowers blood pressure.
  • Reduces the risk of arrhythmias.
  • Reduces the presence of triglycerides in the blood.
  • Slows the appearance of plaque build-up of cholesterol in the arteries.
  • Offers antidepressant effects.
  • Combats the symptoms caused by rheumatoid arthritis, age-related macular degeneration or dry eye disease.

In turn, omega-3 offers other benefits for pregnant women and their babies during the first trimester of pregnancy:

  • Prevention of premature birth.
  • Helps the development of the baby’s brain and retina during gestation.
  • Reduces the possibility of postpartum depression.

Omega 3 supplements

Although consuming omega-3 through food intake is recommended rich in this fatty acid, the consumption of supplements helps those who have greater omega-3 deficiencies in their body.

The latter occurs in older people, athletes or when the foods mentioned above cannot be consumed. Furthermore, there is a variety of omega-3 supplements that can be purchased on our website:
