The 11 Spanish regions where face masks are compulsory

In which autonomous communities is it compulsory to wear a face mask?

Autonomous communities with compulsory use

• Galicia

This is one of the first autonomous communities to act. The outbreaks that have occurred in different Galician municipalities have led the government to adopt compulsory face mask use and to sanction those not wearing one with fines of €100.

• Asturias

A few weeks ago, compulsory use was also agreed. The Asturian government decided to make them compulsory regardless of whether the minimum safety distance could be maintained.

• Catalonia

This is one of the autonomous communities taking the most restrictive approach in this regard. The Government of Catalonia has introduced compulsory face mask use both in public spaces and in enclosed spaces.

• Balearic Islands

This is another place where use is compulsory, except on the beach, at the pool, in bars and restaurants or during sport.

In bars and restaurants, it should be borne in mind that the mask may only be removed when seated at the table. To move around inside the establishment, it will be necessary to wear the mask.

• Basque Country

Compulsory face mask use has come into effect in the Basque Country, but only in specific areas where small outbreaks have been detected.

Even so, the Basque government is studying whether to introduce compulsory use throughout the whole autonomous community in order to prevent Covid from rising among the population.

• Extremadura

This is another of the most restrictive areas due to occasional outbreak cases throughout the community. The authorities are being exemplary and sanctions of between €100 and €6,000 are being introduced for those who do not comply with the rules.

• Murcia

This is another coastal community that has decided to introduce compulsory face mask use. It is necessary to wear a face mask both on the seafront promenade and on the beaches, the only time it may be removed being when going for a swim.

• Aragon

It was introduced on Monday 13 June. From that moment, all people in Aragon must wear a face mask to carry out daily activities such as going to the supermarket, going for a walk, taking out the rubbish, etc.

Failure to comply with the rules may result in sanctions starting at €100.

• La Rioja

It has been one of the latest to join this measure. Since Monday it has introduced compulsory use, except for specific medical exceptions or when doing physical activity in public spaces.

• Andalusia

So far, it is the latest to introduce face mask use among its citizens. Recent spikes in cities such as Malaga have led to this decision.

Its use is compulsory throughout the community, regardless of which province you are in. They will be firm with the measure adopted, with its president stating that those who fail to comply will have to face fines that may range from €100 to €6,000.

From what age is it compulsory to wear a face mask?

The use of face masks will be compulsory for all children and adults from the age of 6.

Exceptions may be made for people who have breathing difficulties or for those whose health may be worsened by wearing a face mask for a continued period of time.
