Tired eyes: symptoms and treatment

Nowadays, problems with tired eyes have increased because we spend long hours in front of screens, which, among other factors, can have a negative impact on our eye health.

What are tired eyes?

Tired eyes are a sensation caused by eye strain. Eye strain occurs when the muscles that control eye movements become tired due to excessive visual effort.

This condition can affect the patient's quality of life and interfere with their wellbeing.

Causes of eye strain

In addition to excessive visual effort, eye strain can be triggered by other factors:

  • Poor lighting, which leads to greater strain on the eyes.
  • Excessive screen use: can cause overexertion of the eye muscles.
  • Uncorrected vision: Not wearing glasses or having the wrong prescription can cause the eyes to strain.
  • Environmental conditions, such as dry air, use of heating, exposure to wind...
  • Lack of rest or sleep.
  • Medical conditions associated with dry eye syndrome, eye allergies or refractive problems.

Tired eyes: symptoms

Tired or strained eyes can appear in the form of different symptoms and vary depending on the person affected, as well as their intensity and duration. Some of the most common symptoms of eye strain are:

  • A feeling of tiredness or heaviness in the eyes.
  • Dry or irritated eyes, caused by not blinking enough or low tear production.
  • Eye discomfort or irritation in the surrounding muscles.
  • Blurred vision and/or difficulty focusing.
  • Sensitivity to light, especially bright lights or screen glare.
  • Headache due to excessive visual effort.

Treatment for tired eyes

For the treatment of eye strain , preventive measures and treatment options should be applied to relieve symptoms. Some recommendations to improve eye fatigue are:

  • Using food supplements rich in omega-3, vitamin A and vitamin C, as they have an anti-inflammatory effect and help reduce eye irritation.
  • Active breaks: rest regularly from screen use.
  • Correction of vision problems: Visit an ophthalmologist, and wear glasses if necessary.
  • Using eye decongestants and artificial tears: these help reduce eye irritation and redness.

With regard to this last point, we recommend these remedies for tired eyes with which you can improve eye strain:
