The most common mistakes when using a face mask

Using mask lanyards, not changing masks whenever recommended, not sterilising washable masks, wearing a surgical mask with an FFP2 mask on top... These are some of the most common mistakes when using a face mask. Want to know more? Keep reading, because we explain it all.

Facemasks have undoubtedly become our inseparable companion since practically the beginning of the pandemic, as a way of protecting ourselves against COVID-19 and trying to prevent and combat the spread of the virus.

For this reason, it is essential that we make proper use of face masks, because if we do not change them when recommended, use non-approved or uncertified masks, or do not wash our hands after touching the mask... we would not be protecting ourselves sufficiently against coronavirus.

Face mask use: the most common mistakes

Below we explain the most common mistakes when using a face mask, which all or almost all of us tend to make when we wear one. Keep reading!

  • Using mask lanyards: we admit that this accessory is very comfortable, we are not going to deny it, buuut... it is not hygienic at all, it does not guarantee that when we put the mask back on it will protect us and, if the virus is on the mask, it can infect us easily when we put it on. For this reason, we recommend replacing the mask lanyard with a mask holder.
  • Using two masks: many of you, with the aim of protecting yourselves as much as possible, use two masks (usually FFP2 and surgical). Although this would not be necessary, if you do it, do it properly. Put on the FFP2 mask first and the surgical mask over it and, of course, change them when recommended (8 hours and 4 hours respectively).
  • Removing your mask when coughing or sneezing: we know this mistake is made by inertia, but there is no excuse! If you cough or sneeze, do not remove or lower your mask under any circumstances. The reason? When this happens, we expel droplets and let us remember that transmission through these particles is very common.
  • Not changing the mask when recommended: surgical masks, as well as FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3 masks, have a maximum duration of use. Surgical masks can be used for up to 4 hours, whereas FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3 masks can be used for 8 hours. Once this time has passed, they must be changed. If we continue using them, the level of protection will not be guaranteed.
  • Using hydroalcoholic gel or soap and water: above all, if we have touched the mask with our hands. The recommendation will always be to disinfect your hands with soap and water, but if you are away from home and do not have it to hand, use hydroalcoholic gel.
