Vitamin D in babies: what you need to know

It helps the proper development and growth of little ones’ bones, contributing to their vitality. We are talking about vitamin D in babies and why it is so important for the body.

A correct level of vitamin D is essential for your little one’s growth, as this vitamin is key to the proper functioning of their immune and bone systems, as well as their correct development.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that we can find in sunlight and in foods such as dairy products and eggs. But when this is not enough... what can be done to avoid vitamin D deficiency? We explain it to you.

Importance of vitamin D in babies

As we mentioned at the beginning of this post, vitamin D plays a very important role in the normal development and growth of bones, as it participates in calcium metabolism, which is closely linked to bones and teeth.

In addition, a good level of vitamin D in the first months of life helps prevent possible illnesses such as rickets, characterised by causing deformity in bones and cartilage, due to a lack of calcium, phosphorus or vitamin D. This may also affect the child’s height.

Recommended amount of vitamin D

The recommendation for babies under one year of age is 400 IU per day, although our recommendation will always be that you first consult your paediatrician. In this regard, it is important to take into account aspects such as weight, diet, whether the baby takes formula milk or breastfeeding...

During the first 6 months of the baby’s life, breastfeeding is recommended. The reason? breast milk contains the vitamin D they need for growth and development.

And in cases where breastfeeding is not possible or is not enough, how can we achieve these vitamin D levels? Through supplements with vitamin D, which guarantee the daily intake our little one needs.

Vitamin D supplements for babies

They can begin to be administered from the first or second week of life and throughout the first year of age, provided that a paediatrician supervises these doses.

And the format? You can find these supplements in drops that are given directly to the baby, or diluted in milk. Bear in mind that all (or almost all) formula milks include vitamin D, so in this respect it would not be necessary to supplement with an additional product unless a specialist recommends this extra vitamin D.
