Sex during pregnancy

Can I have sex if I am pregnant? Only in the first few months? Could it affect the baby? These are some of the questions many couples have when they find out they are expecting. In today’s post, we explain everything you need to know about sex during pregnancy. Read on.

Yes, unless a gynaecologist has specifically advised against it, sex during pregnancy is possible. The only real drawback to having sex at this stage is the discomfort the woman may feel.

The best time to have sex during pregnancy

Although you can have sex during any month of pregnancy, the second trimester is often the time of greatest sexual activity. Why? Because the bump is not yet very large, so certain positions are not uncomfortable. And what happens in the first trimester?

During these three months, the woman’s body goes through many changes: the placenta begins to form, hormones surge... which can lead to fatigue, tiredness, sleepiness and a loss of sexual appetite.

And in the final trimester? As we mentioned earlier, the increased size of the bump can cause discomfort.

But that does not mean you cannot maintain sexual relations during this stage or during the first three months of pregnancy. It is simply that some couples may not enjoy it as much, or may find that they have better sex during the second trimester.

Benefits of having sex during pregnancy

As you probably already know, having sex is very good for the body: it helps prevent stress, strengthens the heart, triggers the release of endorphins and improves blood circulation, the last two being especially important for happiness and wellbeing.

And for the baby, what are the benefits of having sex? It is important to know that the mother’s psychological state is closely connected to the baby’s, and sexual relations can contribute to a positive mood.

As for the physical side, this does not affect the baby’s development. During penetration, the baby is not harmed. A healthy uterus can receive sexual stimulation without any problem.

So if you are one of those couples who have not wanted to, or have not yet had, sex during pregnancy, we encourage you to try it for the many benefits it can bring to both your health and your baby’s wellbeing.
