Diaper rash: common symptoms and effective treatment

Nappy changes are important, and the possible associated dermatitis is one of the most common queries at the pharmacy counter. At Farmaciasdirect, we explain how to help prevent and treat nappy rash.

Nappy rash: what is it?

Nappy rash is a consequence of wearing a nappy. It consists of an inflammation of the skin in the form of a rash in the area covered by the nappy (abdomen, genitals, buttocks and the upper thighs).

Symptoms of nappy rash

Nappy rash presents characteristic signs in the areas covered by the nappy:

  • The skin is sensitive to the touch or to friction.
  • There is redness and inflammation.
  • A rash may be visible.
  • The person affected will be more irritable. In the case of babies, we will observe crying or discomfort, especially during nappy changes.

If nappy rash becomes complicated or is not treated in time, a fungal infection may develop and, in some cases, fissures may appear.

What are the causes of nappy rash?

As its name suggests, nappy rash is a consequence of wearing a nappy. We must bear in mind that the nappy is in direct and constant contact with the skin.

The skin in the area will be affected by friction from the nappy, sweat generated by heat in the area, and contact with stools and urine. This can disrupt the skin barrier and cause a rash and inflammation.

Prevention of nappy rash

Preventing nappy rash can avoid significant discomfort and ensure the baby's quality of life and wellbeing. At Farmaciasdirect, we suggest some guidelines to keep the area dry, clean and as protected as possible:

  • Change the nappy frequently — do not leave it wet for a long time.
  • Clean gently at every change using skin-friendly wet wipes.
  • Allow some time for the area to air dry.
  • Use highly absorbent nappies with good breathability.

Treatment of nappy rash

We must ensure the skin barrier in the area remains healthy and strong to prevent nappy rash from developing. At Farmaciasdirect, we recommend A-Derma Exomega Dermalibour Barrier Protective Cream.

This is a cream that soothes, repairs, regenerates and protects the area, thanks to the star ingredient in its formula, Avena Rhealba. The skin barrier is kept in perfect condition, preventing any alterations. It also acts as a "second skin": it isolates, protects, purifies and relieves irritated skin. It contains no silicones or fragrances, is water-resistant (withstands up to 5 baths) and has an insulating texture that is not at all sticky.

Also for daily use, it is highly recommended to use a good nappy cream such as Bepanthol Baby Protective Ointment, which strengthens the skin barrier and helps prevent irritation and redness caused by nappy use, keeping the skin hydrated and protected from the very first application.

Problems associated with nappy rash

If these steps are not followed and/or the cream is not applied, irritation, a rash and even infection may occur. In cases of infection, a cream containing miconazole should be applied to treat it.
