Cannabidiol (CBD) bases its mode of action on the interaction with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in the human body. The ECS consists of a number of receptors (the most important of which are CB1 and CB2) distributed throughout the body and CBD modulates their activity by influencing the uptake and breakdown of endocannabinoids. The SEC consists of a number of receptors distributed throughout the body, for example in the brain or in the bones. The most important receptors are CB1 and CB2. While CB1 receptors are mainly found in the brain and central nervous system, CB2 receptors are mainly found in the cells of the immune system.
CBD does not interact directly with these receptors, but modulates their activity by influencing the uptake and breakdown of endocannabinoids, the endogenous molecules that bind to these receptors.
