Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), both belonging to the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, are essential fatty acids. They are called "essential" because the body cannot produce them on its own, so they must be ingested in sufficient quantities. They are obtained from oily fish and some green leafy vegetables, flaxseed oil and certain vegetable oils.
EPA and DHA contribute to the proper functioning of the heart. This beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 250 mg EPA and DHA.
Red yeast rice (Monascus purpureus) contains active ingredients called monacolins which inhibit hepatic cholesterol synthesis. One of these is monacolin K which, at a daily dose of 10 mg, contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol concentrations.
