What is Lizipaine and what is it for?

Lizipaina is a medicine in the form of lozenges that has a dual effect thanks to its ingredients. On the one hand, Lizipaina has the antiseptic and disinfectant action of chlorhexidine while, on the other, it has an anaesthetic action thanks to benzocaine.

Lizipaine for sore throat

Lizipaina throat lozenges are indicated for the temporary and symptomatic relief of infections of the mouth and throat, such as cold sores, irritation and aphonia.

Can Lizipaine be used for coughs?

Lizipaine is not indicated to treat coughs. It is a medicine mainly used for mild infections of the mouth and throat, as it relieves sore throat and irritation due to its antiseptic, anaesthetic and soothing properties.

If you are looking for a cough medicine, we recommend that you consult a doctor or pharmacist.

Who it is for

Lizipaina throat lozenges are intended for use in adults and children aged 6 years and over.

How to take Lizipaina

Dosage Lizipaina: Take 1 tablet and allow it to dissolve slowly in your mouth. Do not chew or swallow it, as its action is local and only manifests itself when in direct contact with the affected area.

Lizipaine How often to take? You can take one tablet every 2 or 3 hours, without exceeding the maximum daily dose of 8 tablets a day.

Contraindications Lizipaina

Do not use Lizipaina:

  • In children under 6 years of age, because they are more sensitive to the use of benzocaine.
  • In people over 65 years of age, as, in addition to sensitivity, it may cause hypertension.
  • In case of hypersensitivity to benzocaine, chlorhexidine, other local anaesthetics, or to any of the components present in this medicine.
  • If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, except under strict medical advice.

Precautions to be taken:

  • Special care in patients with hypertension, as its formula contains sodium.

Lizipaine in pregnancy and lactation

There are no adequate and well known studies on the use of medicines with combined benzocaine and chlorhexidine in pregnant and breastfeeding women.

  • Lizipaine and pregnancy: This medicine should not be used during pregnancy without medical supervision, who will assess that the potential benefit of the treatment for the mother outweighs the possible risk to the developing foetus. We therefore recommend that you always consult your doctor before using this medicine.
  • Lizipaine and lactation: It is not known whether benzocaine/chlorhexidine or its metabolites are excreted in breast milk, so Lizipaine should not be used during lactation without first consulting a doctor.

Side effects

Like all medicines, Lizipaine may cause side effects, although not all patients will experience them. In this case, the following have been observed:

  • Frequent: irritation in the mouth or tip of the tongue, allergic reactions due to the use of chlorhexidine or benzocaine.

  • Very frequent: Oedema (due to fluid retention), hypertension, discolouration of the teeth may occur (this is temporary and is eliminated by cleaning) and altered taste may occur.

We recommend consulting the Lizipaine package leaflet to find out more about possible side effects.
