INFO AND TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

Perineal massage during the last month of pregnancy can reduce the likelihood of perineal trauma (mainly episiotomies), and ongoing pain. Many authorities, including the World Health Organisation (WHO), recommend the use of antenatal perineal massage (PPM) during the second stage of pregnancy to keep the perineum intact and reduce the risk of severe perineal tears. PPM is generally advised from 34-36 weeks of pregnancy until the birth of the baby. Women are usually taught to spend about 10 minutes regularly massaging the perineum. A Cochrane study (2013) published 4 trials, involving 2497 women, concluded that PPM was associated with a reduced risk of severe perineal trauma and postpartum complications, especially for first-time mothers. 1 in 15 women who underwent PPM did not receive perineal sutures after delivery. A 16% reduction in the incidence of episiotomies by women who practised PPM. Less perineal pain at 3 months postpartum in multiparous women who received PPM. Women who practised PPM found it acceptable and believed that it helped them to prepare for childbirth. 87% of women who practised PPM said they would recommend it to another pregnant woman.
