Pressure ulcers are caused by tissue ischaemia caused by continuous pressure greater than the capillary pressure responsible for oxygenating an immobilised and pressurised area of the body. As a result of the lack of oxygenation to that area, tissue necrosis occurs.

This type of injury is always preventable.

Pressure ulcers occur in a muscular area as a response to the lack of oxygen produced by the continuous pressure greater than the capillary pressure that oxygenates the area, if the person is immobilised for a longer time than is desirable. The supporting bones squeeze the gluteal musculature, resulting in tissue necrosis.

In addition to the weight of the immobilised person, the formation of these wounds is accelerated by:

- Folds in personal and bedding clothing.

- If the person is wet, tissue maceration is promoted.

- Clinical factors such as anaemia, infection, diabetes, hypovitaminosis C.
