How to Wash Your Hands Correctly with Soap

Due to the current situation we are facing with Covid-19, it seems that the population is much more aware of the importance of carrying out a hygienic hand wash on a regular basis. The reason? Countless bacteria can build up on them and they are the main focus in the transmission of viruses and other diseases. In this post I leave you some tips on recommended products and how to do a correct hand wash with soap.

When to wash your hands and how often?

This is a very ambiguous question, since it will depend on several factors, such as whether it is a healthy or sick person, or on other reasons such as the professional activity each person carries out.

Normally, for a healthy person, it is recommended to wash your hands before each meal and before leaving the bathroom. In the case of a healthy person who is in charge of small children whose nappies they have to change, prepare food, etc., the frequency will obviously be much higher. The same will be true for people who work in health centres or hospitals.

In general, I advise carrying out a correct hand wash with soap before and after handling food. Before each meal, as I said previously.

Every time we go to the bathroom. After being in contact with physical money, since it is one of the elements where the most bacteria accumulate. After having been in contact with any animal.

And lastly and essentially, after coming back from taking out the rubbish, since both the bag itself and the act of opening the bin can accumulate thousands and thousands of bacteria.

5 steps for hand washing according to the WHO

The WHO recommends that to wash your hands correctly with soap, the process should last between 40 and 60 seconds. The steps are as follows:

  1. Wet your hands with water.
  2. Pour a sufficient amount of soap.
  3. Start rubbing your hands together.
  4. Rub the palm of one hand against the back of the other and alternate.
  5. Interlace your fingers and start rubbing the palms of your hands.
  6. Use the palm of one hand to rub the back of the fingers of the opposite hand.
  7. Wash the thumb thoroughly. To do this, use circular movements with the palm of the opposite hand. Repeat the movements with the opposite hand.
  8. Rub the tips of the fingers in the palm of the opposite hand and vice versa.
  9. Rinse your hands with water.
  1. Use a disposable towel to dry your hands and use the same one to turn off the tap.

The use of hydroalcoholic gels to wash your hands is reserved for when soap and water are not available. Whenever possible, use bar soap or liquid soap, as the use of hydroalcoholic gel or alcohol can cause damage to the hands.
