Covid-19 Self-Test

Since 20 July, the self-test is now available on our websitewhich, quickly and easily, identifies possible cases of Covid-19. We explain, step by step, how to carry it out and how to interpret the result. Read on!Although the instructions for use and the interpretation of the result will depend on each manufacturer and the instructions included with each model, these self-tests are used to detect possible positive Coronavirus casesin patients who present symptoms within the first 5 days and in those who, within a maximum period of 7 days, are suspected of being infected.

Self-test: What does it include?

TheCovid-19 self-test sold in pharmacies and online pharmaciesconsists of the following elements:

  • Sterile swab:nasal item inserted into the patient's nostrils (between 2 and 3 cm) via the fibre tip to take the sample.
  • Extraction solution:liquid which, when in contact with the sterile swab, detects whether the patient is positive or negative for Coronavirus.
  • Extraction tube:plastic container into which the extraction solution is poured and mixed with the sterile swab to carry out the test.
  • Antigen test cassette: shows the test result when it comes into contact with the extraction solution.

When should the Covid-19 self-diagnostic test be done?

According to information published by theAEMPS (Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products)for greater effectiveness, this self-testshould be carried out during the first 5 days from the onset of symptoms or within the first 7 days from infection, as this is “when the viral load is at its highest”. However, AEMPS also warns thatthere are cases in which both false positives and false negatives can be obtained, when the viral load is low but infection exists or when the test is carried out without symptoms. That is why our recommendation is tosee a specialist so the test can be repeatedand they can advise how to proceed in cases where the result is incorrect or difficult to interpret.

How is the rapid antigen test carried out?

As we mentioned before, the instructions for use will vary depending on each manufacturer but, in the case of theBoson self-testthe steps to follow are as follows:

Step 1

With your hands and surface sterilised and once you have checked that the test includes all the necessary elements, pour the extraction solution into the extraction tube (to make it easier, you can rest it in the part of the test box indicated for this purpose)

Step 2

Open the sterile swab and, with your back straight and your head tilted slightly backwards, insert it into one of the nostrils, around 2-3 cm, and rotate it 3 to 5 times.Repeat the same action in the other nostril.

Step 3

Place the swab (the end that has been inserted into the nose) into the extraction tube and, so that it comes into contact with the extraction solution, press the tube with your fingers. Then remove the swab and close the tube.

Step 4

After approximately one minute, take the cassette andplace 3 drops from the extraction tube onto the circular area marked with the letter Sand wait about 15 minutes to find out the result.

Step 5

Once this time has passed, take the cassette to read the result. For it to be valid, a red line must appear next to the letter C.

  • Positive:both the letter C and the letter T are accompanied by a red line.
  • Negative:a red line appears at the letter C.
  • Invalid:there is no sign of any line or it only appears next to the letter T.

Points to bear in mind when carrying out the self-test

As we pointed out at the beginning of this post, there are cases in which the test result may be a false positive or negative or may produce an error. In these situations, it is advisable to repeat the test or consult a doctor for advice on how to proceed. Other points we should bear in mind when carrying outthe Covid-19 self-testare:

  • If the patient is a baby, although there are no contraindications regarding its use, our advice is that the test should be carried out by a specialist.
  • It is advisable toblow your nose before carrying out this self-test, as well as sterilising your hands and the surface on which you will place the items included.
  • For greater effectiveness, place the swab into the extraction tube immediatelyafter removing it from the nose.
  • Unlike PCR, to ensure that the self-test is carried out correctly, it is necessary toinsert it into both nostrils.
  • Read the instructions on how to use the test, as this may vary depending on the manufacturer.
  • To avoid possible injury or discomfort in the nose, tilt your head slightly backwardsand do the same with the sterile swab.
