As an oncology patient, I've been told to protect myself from the sun, why?

When undergoing oncology treatments, the skin becomes more sensitive and fragile. This is one of the most common effects of radiotherapy or chemotherapy, especially when exposed to external factors such as cold weather, pollution or solar radiation.

This makes protecting ourselves from the sun a priority for patients undergoing any of these treatments, not only to prevent possible burns or irritation, but also to keep the skin healthy and protected during this stage.

How should we do this? As well as avoiding direct contact with the sun, using accessories such as caps or hats, wearing cotton clothing that covers the whole body, or trying not to go out during the hours when the sun is strongest, it is essential to include in our skincare routine a broad-spectrum sunscreen that is suitable for even the most sensitive skin.

Sunscreen creams to use during oncology treatment

As the skin is so sensitive and fragile, the most important thing is to look for a sunscreen with SPF 50+, formulated without fragrance, suitable for skin prone to irritation, with an easy-to-apply, fast-absorbing texture, and that protects against UVA, UVB and blue light radiation.

Avène Intense Protect SPF 50+

This Avène sunscreen is one of our recommendations for skin that needs protection during oncology treatment.

Avène Intense Protect SPF 50+ is enriched with active ingredients that help soothe, hydrate and protect the skin on both the face and body. Its lightweight texture also makes application easier without leaving a greasy residue.

Avène KA SunsiStick SPF 50+

Another option that we recommend because of its stick format, which makes it very easy to apply and reapply, is SunsiStick KA con SPF 50+ de Avène.

It is perfect for areas that need extra protection because they are more exposed, such as the face, or for more sensitive and damaged areas. It also has a transparent finish and a long-lasting effect.

It is formulated with active ingredients such as thialidine and provitamin E, a duo of antioxidants known for protecting cells from oxidative stress, and vederine, which helps to increase the expression of vitamin D receptors and strengthen the skin barrier function.

Protecting ourselves from the sun with a good sunscreen is essential at any stage, but even more so during oncology treatment. It is also important to follow the recommendations we mentioned earlier, such as using accessories, wearing suitable clothing, or avoiding excessive sun exposure, especially during the summer months.

Do not forget to keep these tips in mind and consult a healthcare professional, who can help you choose the sunscreen that best suits you and your skin type.
