The Dreaded Skin Dark Spots: We Help You from Your Online Pharmacy

From your online pharmacy, we want to help you understand how those dark spots on your skin appear, how to avoid them and how to treat them.

What are dark spots?

Dark spots are actually skin depigmentations or hyperpigmentations derived from abnormal melanin production (dark pigment).

If there is loss of melanin, vitiligo occurs (white spot), and if there is excess melanin, melasma, chloasma, freckles, etc. may appear.

What causes them?

They may be due to an autoimmune problem or, most commonly, photoageing from excessive sun exposure, pregnancy, hormonal imbalances, photosensitising medicines such as NSAIDs or oral contraceptives, or even sun exposure with perfumes.

It is a very broad topic we could write about at length, but in this post we are going to focus on hyperpigmentation caused by sun exposure.

After a long summer exposing ourselves to the sun and not always with suitable protection, we can act against hyperpigmentation to prevent it from darkening, and we can also lighten it with treatments that are more suitable when sun exposure is lower.

How can you recognise hyperpigmentation?

The most common dark spot in young women is melasma, which usually appears on the forehead, cheekbone, upper lip and chin. It has irregular edges and a dark yellow colour and is mainly due to hormonal factors (use of oral contraceptives) and sun exposure without adequate protection.

How should you act against hyperpigmentation?

First of all, we must pay special attention and detect whether:

  • It is asymmetrical
  • It has irregular borders
  • It has more than one colour
  • It changes size

If any of these factors changes over time, we should consult a dermatologist, but if none of this changes, we can treat it with depigmenting active ingredients.

Among the most common depigmenting active ingredients are:

Hydroquinone (only by medical prescription)

  • Antioxidants, which neutralise free radicals and, when associated with filters, prevent reappearance. The most used is ascorbic acid or vitamin C, which, as well as preventing hyperpigmentation from appearing, illuminates and evens the tone. It is a good adjuvant for a depigmenting treatment.
  • Azelaic acid, which inhibits the enzyme that stimulates melanin production
  • Kojic acid and adjuvants such as retinoic and salicylic acid, which act as keratolytics.

With all this, now is the time to act against hyperpigmentation. There are many products that contain several depigmenting active ingredients, but in this case we are going to present a brief representation of each one:

What can be a good facial depigmenting treatment?

Sensyses Cleanser Lightening First of all, we recommend daily cleansing; clean, hydrated skin always tolerates active-ingredient penetration better. For this case, there is a new Sesderma product, Sensyses Cleanser Lightening which is used as a cleanser and make-up remover and also soothes and illuminates the skin. It is indicated for skin with pigmentation or lack of radiance.

Directions for use

Apply it with a cotton pad, soaking it with its dosing pump and dragging until impurities are removed from the skin. After cleansing, Sesderma Azelac Ru depigmenting serum, with azelaic acid, ascorbyl glucoside and retinol included in its liposomal formula, lightens and reduces the intensity of the spot and prevents its reappearance. Apply morning and night.

Azelac Ru A good depigmenting product would be MartiDerm DSP-CREAM SPF50+ which contains ellagic, kojic and salicylic acids and vitamin C, as well as sun protection, essential to avoid the spot darkening even in winter.

The star product of the depigmenting treatment is DSP-COVER SPF50+: a camouflage stick (with colour) that, as well as continuing to lighten the spot (kojic and salicylic acid), camouflages it and has protection. It is a product we can carry with us and repeat every two hours.

Directions for use

When we get home at night, we will cleanse again with Sensyses Cleanser Lightening (also used as a make-up remover), the serum, and apply MartiDerm DSP-CREAM Renovation. With depigmenting active ingredients, it also contains AHAs, recommended only at night, favouring cell renewal.

Twice a week, we could use DSP-MASK: it is a depigmenting mask to leave on overnight, although it is recommended to start by leaving it on for only 30 minutes and gradually increasing the time according to skin tolerance.

I would like to remind you that a depigmenting treatment is long and requires consistency. It must also be applied gradually according to skin tolerance, because its acidic ingredients can be a little irritating if applied drastically and in large quantities. Always avoid the summer season and use very high sun protection.

All these products can be found on our website, they are quite well priced and some, such as Sensyses Cleanser Lightening are on promotion with the serum. Share
