Menstrual cup: how do I choose the right size?

Many of you, after learning about its many benefits, have jumped on the menstrual cup bandwagon. But when choosing between one with or without an applicator, or the size, a question comes up: how do I choose the size? In today’s post we explain the tricks for choosing the size that best suits you.

Many of you already know that, without a doubt, the menstrual cup is our favourite discovery of all time. Because it is comfortable to wear, because it is environmentally friendly, because it does not stain, because it helps prevent infections and because there are different sizes.

But it does not stop there. In addition to the thousand and one advantages of using it, the menstrual cup also includes an applicator for those using it for the first time who need a little push, quite literally, and different sizes according to our body, whether we exercise...

For those of you who have decided to try it but do not know much more than that it is super comfortable, hygienic and practical, keep reading. We explain how to choose the menstrual cup size.

How do I choose my menstrual cup size? Questions and tips

The menstrual cup can be found in three sizes (S, M and L), where both the diameter and capacity up to the upper edge, the length of the cup and the length of the stem vary.

So you can understand it better, the diameter of size S is 38 mm with a capacity of 22 ml. That of size M is 42 mm with a capacity of 30 ml and that of size L has a diameter of 46 mm and a capacity of 42 ml.

And having said that, now you will be wondering: how do I choose my menstrual cup size? Based on these aspects:

  • If you exercise: for athletics, basketball, volleyball, tennis, running or padel, you need a larger size, because these are sports that tend to weaken the pelvic floor.

On the other hand, if the exercise you do is calmer, such as yoga or Pilates, it will be a smaller size.

  • Height: if you are tall or have a larger build, your size will be larger. If you are shorter or narrower, a smaller size.
  • Pregnancy: two things have an influence here: age and the type of birth, whether it was vaginal or by caesarean section. Pay close attention below. The subject of sizes during pregnancy is a real tangle.

What is the menstrual cup size for pregnant women?

If you are under 18 and have not given birth, your size will be S. If you are over 18, it will be between S and M. On the other hand, if you are underage but have already been a mother, vaginal birth is size S/M and caesarean birth is size S.

For those of you between 18 and 35, if you have not yet been pregnant, size S/M. And if you have been, vaginal birth M/L and caesarean birth S/M.

Finally, and now we will stop confusing you with so many sizes, ages and births, those of you over 35 will be size M/L if you are already a mother and size M if you have not been.

As you will have seen, in vaginal births the size is usually larger than with caesarean sections, due to the extension of the vagina caused by childbirth.

Another important thing you should know, which some of you have already asked us, is that when choosing the cup size, you should not do it by comparing it with tampon size. Do you know why?

Because tampon size depends on menstrual flow and that is something that does not influence it. And finally, for those of you who are now clear about how to choose the menstrual cup size you should use but do not know how to apply it, in this post we talk about how to insert the cup, doubts and tips that may come to mind.
