Eye Drops: What Are They and What Are They Used For?

Dryness, itching, irritation and even the feeling of having something in your eye. These are some of the discomforts our eyes can experience when we spend many hours in front of a screen, are in a dry environment or do activities that require focusing at a short distance for a long time. In today’s post, we talk about eye drops, what they are, what they are used for and which one to use. Keep reading! We are spending more and more time in front of our mobile phone or computer and, combined with periods of stress, tiredness and environments that are too stuffy and poorly lit, this can cause what we know as eye strain.

This can lead to sore, red eyes, swelling, blurred vision, headaches and dry eyes. But... don’t panic! Below, we explain what to do to combat these symptoms and take care of your vision.

Eye drops: the solution for tired eyes

Eye drops are the perfect solution when we notice discomfort in the eyes. Depending on the type, they help to refresh, lubricate and even prevent external substances such as dust from entering the eye, as is the case with lubricating drops or artificial tears. Meanwhile, moisturising drops relieve irritation and deeply hydrate the eyes when they are exposed to tobacco smoke, chlorine from swimming pools, air conditioning or heating.

How do they work in the eye?

What eye drops do for the eye is provide the moisture that it does not produce naturally. This means the eyes will produce enough tears to combat the symptoms we mentioned at the beginning of the post: irritation, pain, itching...

How do you use eye drops?

When it comes to using eye drops, it is very important to keep the following points in mind:

  • Expiry: how long the product remains in optimal condition once opened
  • Frequency: normally, all eye drops can be used several times a day, whenever discomfort appears
  • Contact lenses: check whether they are compatible with use alongside lenses
  • Hygiene: it is very important to apply them with clean hands and avoid letting the eye drops touch the skin or the eye, in order to guarantee sterility
