Iodine in a presentation of 50 tablets from Nature Essential contains 150 µg of potassium iodide per tablet, which has the property of improving the production of hormones from the thyroid and normalising the function of this gland, which plays an important role in the correct functioning of the human body.

Potassium iodide (KI) is often prescribed in radioactive emergencies, however, it only protects the thyroid against radioactive iodine, but does not protect other parts of the body, nor does it combat other types of radiation.

In some nuclear emergencies, usually caused by power plant accidents, it is possible for radioactive iodine to be released into the environment and, as a consequence, be breathed in or consumed by exposed persons causing internal contamination. This type of contamination can increase the risk of thyroid problems years after exposure.

Potassium iodide is a class of non-radioactive iodine that is often used to help prevent the thyroid from absorbing radioactive material, specifically radioactive iodine (I-131), so it should be taken immediately after exposure to radioactive iodine.
