What is Bayer?
The Bayer brand specialises in the care and maintenance of people's health. The company is strongly dedicated to the creation of products to alleviate, prevent and cure all kinds of illnesses. It is a global holding company that focuses not only on personal health care, but also on agricultural production.
The company was founded in Barmen, Germany in 1863 and has been growing ever since. Bayer enjoys a privileged position in the world of pharmaceuticals. Thanks to years of research, the group, which started out as a dye factory, became known for the important discovery of acetylsalicylic acid, the main compound in aspirin. Bayer arrived in Spain in 1899 when it set up the company "Federico Bayer y Cia" to market its well-known dyes in the country. Bayer' s growth was very rapid and today it has more than 150 years of experience in the sector as a leading company in the fields of health, agriculture and the distribution of quality raw materials.
The group is characterised by steady growth and a high level of innovation in all its products. It comprises around 307 consolidated companies in 77 countries around the world. It spends a large part of its revenues and profits on R&D and therefore offers a wide range of products that are very useful for humanity and contribute to improving the quality of life of many people.
The company has several subgroups and service companies created and separated in order to improve corporate strategies. The core group companies were transformed into joint stock companies controlled by Bayer AG. These companies are:
- Bayer Crop Science: was created in 2002 from the merger of Bayer's own agrochemicals division with another company. It has become one of the world's leading innovators in the field of crop protection.
- Bayer HealthCare: is a subgroup supplying medicines and pharmaceuticals. Its main objective is to care for the health of people and animals. It is subdivided into four groups: Bayer Schering Pharma, Bayer Consumer Care, Bayer Animal Healht and Bayer HealthCare.
- Bayer Material Science: is a supplier of high-tech, high-quality polymers developed for a wide variety of applications relevant to everyday life.
- Currenta: is the service company responsible for the management and operation of the chemical industry. It provides utilities, infrastructure management, safety, security, analysis and vocational training.
Bayer is governed by a Board of Directors composed of Werner Baumann, Wolfgang Plischke, Richard Pott, and Marijn Dekkers. Its substantial shares are listed on major stock exchanges such as the London Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange. In 2018 Bayer successfully completed the acquisition of Monsanto, both of which are considered to be the world's largest biotech companies on their own.
Since its inception, the Bayer Group has shown a strong social and legal commitment and is therefore truly committed to the interests of society. The identity values of this brand are summarised for them in the acronym LIFE: Leadership, Integrity, Flexibility and Efficiency.
